1700 square kilometers) that belongs to the Republic of
Tanzania. The island of Zanzibar is around 30 km far from
Tanzania, and its weather is tropical quite in the whole territory.
This island is today very famous because of its wonderful ocean
and sandy beaches. The island of Zanzibar is separated from

mainland Tanzaniafrom a 22-mile long channel; it's an archipelago

that also includesthe Pemba Islands and many islets, located in the

Indian Ocean. The wild nature island of Zanzibar itself is 60 miles

long and 20miles wide; its highliting charachteristics include

spectacular wildsandy beaches and the magic of historic Stone

Town, that'sactually said to be the only East African functioning

ancienttown, definetely a place to explore! The beaches in Zanzibar

arean utmost paradise; dotted with little fishing villages wherepeople

live a simple life, unchanged throughout the ages.

Zanzibar Stone Town.

It may not have a particularly romantic name, but Stone Town is the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar, little changed in the last 200 years. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses whose original owners vied with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings. This one-upmanship is particularly reflected in the brass-studded, carved, wooden doors - there are more than 500 different examples of this handiwork. You can spend many idle hours and days just wandering through the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways.

Zanzibar Touring.

Stone Town

This tour takes you through fabled Stone Town, where history appears to stand still. With visits to the House of Wonders, the Palace Museum (People's Palace), Dr Livingstone's House and the Arab Fort amongst others, it is a fascinating look at the essence of Zanzibar. You will see Zanzibar's bustling market, winding alleyways, ornately carved and studded doors, two cathedrals and countless mosques! A trip to the site of Sultan Barghash's harem at Marahubi should also be included and rounds off an insight into Zanzibar's huge history and vibrant culture. Stone Town has some excellent gifts shops with plenty of souvenirs and handicrafts to choose from.

Spice Plantations

The history of Zanzibar would be incomplete without the cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and many other spices which brought the Sultans of Oman and the beginnings of the infamous slave trade. They can be seen in the plantations just outside Zanzibar town, and a good tour includes opportunities to dazzle the senses with fresh spices. A detailed description is given about a variety of spices, and their uses in cooking and cosmetics. Visitors will be fascinated by the sheer number of spices produced and their incredible value for many ailments. This is also the cheapest place to purchase spices and spice oils.

Jozani Forest.

The Jozani Natural Forest Reserve is located in the central east region of Zanzibar island and is home to the rare Red Colobus Monkey (pictured opposite), which is endemic to Zanzibar. These monkeys are full of character, and roam freely. They can also be seen at very close quarters just outside the reserve's perimeter and are incredibly photogenic. Jozani is home to other species including Syke's monkey's, small buck and bushpigs. The elusive Zanzibar leopard (last sited several years ago) is said to feed here at night - perhaps this is why the reserve is only open during the day?! Jozani has an excellent nature trail and the guides are well trained and informative.

Prison Island

Once the site of a gaol for misbehaving slaves, the island lies just off the old stone town. It is fringed with a beautiful coral reef, ideal for snorkelling, and has a lovely white beach for sun-bathing.

It is also home to a family of giant tortoises, imported from the Seychelles in the late 19th century. This island is ideal for a day-trip with refreshments available throughout the day. It also has a small restaurant where you can enjoy freshly caught fish.

Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel.

Located on the northernmost tip of Zanzibar, Ras Nungwi is a four-star resort offering accommodation in Lodge Rooms or Chalets, and is one of our very favourite options on the island. The hotel takes its name from the local lighthouse or ‘mnarani’ in Swahili.

The hotel offers a wide range of facilities including swimming pool, free internet, library, traditional games and TV in the bar area and pool table (at an extra cost).

Matemwe Beach Village

The Matemwe beach village is a small guesthouse located on the North-east coast of Zanzibar.

Rooms are simple but very comfortable. All rooms are en-suite and have ceiling fans and mosquito nets. There are seven standard rooms near the ocean front and ten set further back which still give a glimpse of the sea. There are also a number of popular suites that offer a more luxurious night’s sleep including the Asali honeymoon suite with its own plunge pool and dedicated staff.

Pemba Island.

Pemba Island is situated about 80km from Zanzibar Island (Unguja), directly east of Tanga on the Tanzanian mainland. Pemba is smaller than Unguja but has a hillier landscape, although its highest point is less than 100 metres above sea level.

In ancient times, Pemba was known by Arab sailors as 'El Huthera', meaning the Green, on account of her dense and lush vegetation. There are more natural forests and plantations than on Zanzibar island, and Pemba grows more cloves than her bigger sister.

Bagamoyo.

The town of Bagamoyo is the oldest town in Tanzania, founded by the end of the 18th century. It was the original capital of German East Africa and one of the most important trading ports along the East African coast. Today, the town has circa 30,000 inhabitants and is the capital of the District of Bagamoyo, recently being designated as a World Heritage Site.

The coastal Swahili town was one of the most important trading ports on the East African coast and the penultimate stop of slave and ivory caravans travelling on foot from Lake Tanganyika on their way to Zanzibar. Missionaries active in abolishing the slave trade made Bagamoyo, whose name means ‘bury my heart' in Kiswahili, a centre of their activities.
